THE RUSLAN RUSSIAN 1 CDROM. SCREEN SHOTS ABOUT HALF ACTUAL SIZE.
THE SOPHISTICATION OF THE RUSLAN CDROMS, AND ESPECIALLY THE RAPID HIGH QUALITY SOUND MANIPULATION, CANNOT YET BE DEMONSTRATED EFFECTIVELY ON THE WEB. IF YOU NEED MORE INFORMATION THAN IN THE SCREEN SHOTS BELOW, PLEASE SEND £1 POSTAGE STAMPS TO RUSLAN LIMITED FOR THE DEMO CD. (FREE FOR OVERSEAS CLIENTS). THIS GIVES THE WHOLE OF LESSON 1 OF BOTH RUSLAN 1 AND 2 CDROMS.

This is the main lesson menu. The top tabs lead to an Introduction, with an Alphabet workbook and sections on "Pronunciation and Stress", "How to use this CDRom" etc, and to a Resources section, with workbooks on "Numbers and Money", "Grammar Review - Verbs", "Grammar Review - Nouns", "Glossary of Grammar terms", "Word Lists", "Hints for Travellers", "Dictionary" etc.

This is the introductory screen for Lesson 8. You can right click on all the buttons for a translation. A left click takes you to: The Dialogues, Grammar Explanations, Exercises, Practice Exercises, Help, and Back to the Main menu.

This is a dialogue screen from Lesson 1. The "typical foreigner" has lost his visa. You can use the loudspeaker to listen to the whole text, or left click on individual phrases to hear them separately. You can right click on the phrases for a translation. The phrases blush red when the sound is playing, and green when being translated. At the top right you have buttons for "New Words" - a recorded list - and for "Information" - in this case about the Russian visa system. You can click on the yellow note for a comment from the teacher about Sheremetyevo Airport.

This is a screen from Lesson 6 Grammar Section. You can left click on the Russian words to hear them, or right click for a translation or a detailed explanation. In this case the explanation is that the possessive pronouns "your" and "my" have neuter forms that agree with the nouns they refer to.
- "Where is my beer?"
- "There it is!".
- "Is this your wine?"
- "Yes, it's mine."

This is an exercise from Lesson 4. When you click on the man's head, he will say where he has been. You have to find the woman's response, which is a question about whether he can speak the language. You drag and drop the response into the gap, and if the answer is correct you hear it as it drops. If it is wrong it goes back where it was. When you have done the exercise you can click to listen again.
The "Vocabulary" button in the top right corner leads to a list of countries and languages.

This is a Practice listening exercise from Lesson 7. "My father is looking at the Volga". You have to listen to the three commentaries and decide which is a correct description of the photo. For reinforcement, the exercise that follows is a letter-fill dictation exercise based on the correct commentary.

This is a Practice video exercise from Lesson 6. "But which Russian dishes do you know?" You have to watch the video and fill in the gaps in the text with "Drag and Drop". The yellow vocabulary button gives you the vocabulary that you have not met previously in the course. The video used is a clip from the Ruslan video "Moscow for You!".

This shows the system of "rewards". The student has just completed a multiple choice exercise, choosing correct words to complete the eight sentences. At the end of the exercise the picture appears on the screen "On the escalator in the metro". At least half the exercises have a "reward". Teachers can use this device as a check that students have completed work on a particular lesson. Ask your students to bring a list of the rewards from the lesson they are working with to the next class meeting. The picture caption is recorded, and there is the usual translation with a right click.

Halfway through this exercise putting captions to Moscow sights, the student wants to check a word in the dictionary. He/she clicks on "Help" and selects "Dictionary" from the grey menu. The dictionary is a full alphabetical list of all the words in the Ruslan 1 CDRom, Russian to English. "Help" also offers a sophisticated search facility, a Background Information index, access to Grammar Reviews, to the Grammar Glossary, to an "Alphabet Quick Reference" page, to the "Numbers and Money" workbook and to Windows Sound Recorder.

This is the introductory screen for Ruslan 2 Lesson 7. In the Ruslan 2 CDRom there is no English on the screen. Everything is in Russian, with sound, and with a translation on a right click if you need it. The template for the two CDRoms is identical.

A dialogue from Ruslan 2 Lesson 8. Ivan is asking Peter to help him get his VAT back!

An exercise from Ruslan 2 Lesson 6, identifying clothes, with sound on the drop.

A letterfill dictation exercise from Ruslan 2 Lesson 7, with sound on the drop.

The reward on completion of the same exercise.

THERE ARE PROBABLY OVER 1000 DIFFERENT SCREENS IN THESE PROGRAMS. I HOPE THE SHOTS ABOVE WILL GIVE YOU A GOOD "FEEL" FOR THE COURSE.
